My own dear Etta, it is so nice to get your letters that I wish you would write a little oftener. Mamma of course will [2 illegible words] your letters herself as soon as she is better. She has been in bed all day with a chest cold. I hope it will not be as severe a one as my poor Allen had. His cough was more violent & frequent than Mamma's & of course I could not keep him in bed. But he is better now.
For some time passed I really think I was the strongest of the household. I suppose you heard of Julius Rhett's visit to [illegible]. We saw him several times & he enlivened us very much. He is to send up the check which you kindly took to B--- for me. Have I told you how dreadfully busy I am sewing, sewing, sewing. I have two lovely patterns & if you contemplate any additions to your wardrobe you had better let me send them to you. One is a robe for the month(?) with high yoke & long sleeves, to [illegible] sacks & is perfectly lovely. The other is a gored dress with a low necked square yoke--the whole thing sleeves & all cut in me. I have finished so far 3 robes, 6 petticoats, three dresses & the flannels. Every thing is tucked & trimmed with interesting & stitched bands. If I have a chance I will send you one of the robes to see. I have knit my blankets & am now knitting some little white shawls, to take the place of those dreadful flannel things usually worn. Besides this and the housework I am obliged to do (having been unable to get a servant) I have [sole] charge of the garden for what with cutting wood for the R.R. & the ship(?) besides planting.
Allen is not much at home. I wish you would ask Burnet if he has any nice watermelon and to send me some by mail!! You know we have a mail express & telegraph at Acton now, get the Charleston papers regularly & letters from N.Y. reach us now on the third day. I dined with [illegible] today & had a real nice time. She is so sweet to me. Kiss your babies for me, & teach them to love Hennie(?). Ask dear Aunt H--- if she ever means to write to me again & let me know if you want the patterns. Allan joins me in love. Yours lovingly
Helen
