Dear Burnet,
Barnie's third year at Lexington closes with this month and I am unable, now that I am out of business, to keep him there. He proposes to be an engineer and I must without delay get him a position to earn his living. I think the best deportment of civil engineering is architecture, and wish to get him with the office of an architect. Deveraux in Charleston is a competent and st----g man. Do see if there is any possibility of his going into Deveraux's office and getting employment under him. Rail Road engineering is a rough business, with little prospect beyond the position of a superintendent of some particular road, in which business capacity is more important than scientific knowledge.
Please attend to this at once and advise me.
I am here living on against time and hoping to get something to do after a while - possibly in St. Jervis(?).
Sen.(?) Ames lost much (?) [. S]ent a requsition for me to Kellogg, based upon an indictment found without a spark(?) of evidence under instructions of the radical judge Chandler. Ames may make a requisition on Gov. Lewis of this state, in which case I may be advised to go out of the way, for Lewis is personally friendly. I do not know, however, that I shall very far or stay away very long. But I [illegible] to thank Sen. Cash[?].
Hattie looks thin and badly from nursing the baby in this hot weather. Harry is a beautiful child and is healthy and very amiable.
We were gratified recently at Katie's taking the valedictory at the Columbia Institute. Her marks for some months have been all but perfect in every thing.
Mattie has introduced the Sermon(?) here and is president of a club.
I am sorry to hear of Edmuind's difficulties. When you write tell me how he gets on.
Are you going up to Flat Rock soon? I suspect a cold is the cause of Aiken's bad hearing and trust it will not continue.
With our united love to Etta.
