On reverse of letter:
To
Major A. Burnet Rhett
Charleston
S. Carolina
Letter:
Kensington, Saturday
Dear Major, I send by Cato your trousers, waistcoat
and a shirt which last I am sorry is not ironed. I have
9(?) of Ettas with new trim carefully sewed up & will send it by
him if he will take charge of it - if not, I will [illegible].
I was very near scolding Cato for speaking to me of Etta
as Miss(?) Rhett & asking him if he had not too much pride
to be ashamed of saying Mishess(?) but I thought it better
not in(?) the whole. Mr. Johnstone & family are here & yet
I can't get away. I feel so much as if I should never
come back again, that as long as I set to work in
earnest, I get so worried & such a head ache. I like what
I see of Johnstone very much. Cle's(?) energy would
amaze you. He is going all the time & is up part of
every night. Yesterday he came in from the Swamp, mud to
his waist - but having killed five hogs. Now, if there
is only no collision between the two. I think when
I get to Columbia, I will go to bed for a week & try to make
up my mind to what I can't(?) help. If I could only
throw off the feeling of responsibility! I hope Aunt
Heart is well again. My best love to her & all.
Do forward the letters enclose which are stamped
and those which want stamps, please post them first for
me.
I am your friend & cousin,
M.R. SingletonCollection
