Greenville, January 16
It is a long time dearest Etta, since
we have had any communication,
and what is worse, I have an uncomfor-
table sensation that I am in
fault - in fault so far as writing
is concerned for there is surely no
lack of thinking of you & wishing I
could be with you. We are feeling
sadly today at the loss(?) of our kind
neighbor, Mrs. Mills, who went to
her rest yesterday at noon after
more than 3 months of _____ suf-
fering. - it was a happy release for
her, for I am sure her conscientious(?),
gentle spirit has gone to its reward.
I suppose we shall soon lose(?) the
family now - they have only been de-
tained by the impossibility(?) of moving
her. Each month seems to make
us more lonely here. I shall soon
be so busy that I will not have
[side 2]
much time for social life. I find
after ____ing for 5 or 6 hours, I
am not very good company.
We have had a most disagreeable
winter - constant rains & some very
cold weather. We are fortunate
in having made a good provision(?)
of wood, at a cheap rate, so we
make ourselves comfortable, with
a clear conscience. Cap't Earle(?)
arrived 10 days ago with his bride,
tho' by no means the beauty he
described, she is very pretty. A
beautiful complexion, blue eyes, &
a great deal of pretty light hair,
her manners are very ladylike &
pleasing. You would scarcely
recognize Mrs. Earle's parlor - they
have fitted themselves ____, with a
good deal of Mr. Gadsden King's
furniture and everything look fresh
& bright. Mrs. Earle has had all
her children collected, & looks very
beaming & motherly. Captain Earle
[side 3]
has opened a book store, as it is
the only one here, I hope he will
succeed. It looks very fresh &
pretty, but I am not rich enough
to patronise, so I have not been in.
Apropro of marriages, is B___'s
never to take place? I began to
think lover's of 40 are __ & energetic.
I hope so. Marie's(?) coming would be
the signal for action. What
plans have you & Mr. Rhett for the
winter? From all we hear of the
demoralization among the freed men,
you will scarcely be tempted to
____ plantation life. I am glad
Mattie(?) has transferred her respon-
sibilities to another. I am afraid
she must have passed(?) her Christ-
mas there. The Wm. Johnstones were
so ___tory(?) that they must have
searched there some day after the
appointed time. What is thought
of James as writer? I am very
glad such a support has been
[side 4]
opened to him. I think he escapes
a great deal of annoyance in not
being forced to hear all of the com-
plaints of his Mother & Sisters - their
accomplishments are incessant. I get ra-
ther provoked(?_ for we all have to
encounter the same discomfort.
I feel it quite as much tho' ever(?)
do not talk of it. What prospect
is there of Uncle Aiken's going to
Washington? I suppose he has
_________ advice from there.
I believe I have never written since
you sent me the gloves by young
King - very ungrateful as I have
the daily comfort of the gloves - don't
trouble yourself about the beaver
gloves, as I do perfectly well without
them if you have money enough of
mine, do get me instead a pair of
dark kid, 6 1/2 - in this market they
bring in larger sizes. Mama &
Henry _____ in much love for
you all - kind regards to Mr. Rhett.
Write soon. Ever affectly yours(?), Sallie _____Collection
