Dear Burnie,
It is so very long since I have heard from you, or Edmund, that we are all at a loss as to the cause. What can be the matter? B. Rhett writes constantly to his family; why can't you do the same? You have not told me yet whether the shirts sent by Rhett fit you, or not - let me know if you please.
Barnwell has just returned from Grahamville, engaged to be married to Miss Horton of Alabama - a handsome, elegant, accomplished, amiable young lady. We are all extremely anxious to see her of course - and Mary, I hope will soon enjoy that satisfaction, as she accompanies Barnwell tomorrow to town, for the purpose of hearing Parodi sing, who gives two concerts; and Miss H- proposes going down for the same purpose. It appears to me a great journey to undertake for the hearing of a song or two - tho' I confess I should extremely like to hear Parodi. Mr Chaillé goes also, tomorrow, being obliged to meet his uncle in N.O. next week.
Robin is still with us, and unhappily had a return of fever a week ago, so that he is not cured yet, by the quinine - tho B_ & folks may find it so sure a remedy - neither is John cured, nor Mary-Ed nor little Ebby.
Tell Edmund I have heard of his scrape, & should be glad to hear the particulars from himself. Has he forgotten, how I warned him to beware of - & to have but little to do with that James Lowndes? I tell you, that is a poor creature in every sense of the word; not worth a mans(?) regard.
Do my son write to me often & freely, tell me all that concerns, or interests you - and now good night my very dear child -- & may God of mercy & love protect you both, & guide you thro' every difficulty & danger.
Yours with great affection
EW Rhett
