Letter:
[side 1]
Sep 28
Dearest Etta, I was not very
much surprised to find by
your letter that you were not
coming up - for it was getting
rather late for the Sandhills(?)
& not late enough for the plan-
tations. It is a great regret to
me not seeing you thrice, as
I didn't know when that
pleasure may come to me
again. Unless you would
make the effort to come to
Kensington. You will ______
make me so happy when you
do. I was very glad to hear
that all your wedding ar-
rangements went off so well,
and I can easily imagine
how much you enjoyed
your "large family." What
in the world took Uncle
[side 2]
Charles and Bina to VA
at this late season. I won-
der whether it might be in
order to take Em ______
Sim somewhere. Soon the
old place will be full of
people come home from their
different excursions
and your house too will
soon be full. Where do you
expect the Richard & ______-
and is there any talk of
Catherine's marriage & _______
Rhett's love (!) affair with
Annie Hempton is spoken
of by the good people of Columbia
as are "old attachments"
and I suppose ________ will
support all the courtship
between "now & then" The
Miss Adams to whom Young
Stephen (?) is engaged does not
[side 3]
live in this benighted(?) _____, tho'
she belongs to the family. She is
our only child, is said to be
very accomplished & to sing
beautifully. I think her par-
ents have lived in Bath
none since the war. I ______
her branch are very superior
to their Torkite(?) cousins. I
want this eve(?) to make a visit
to Mr.(Mrs.?) Bryce, a daughter of
Mr. Clarkson. Her husband
is the Superintendant of the
Alabama Insane Hospital.
They live in Tuscaloosa
at war at her house. Samy(?)
Ferfusm(?), & his Brigade had a
_______, of which he wrote me
an account. She is really a
most agreeable, well had
woman & knows so many
people & is so well _____ _____
what is going on in the world
that it was very pleasant
to meet her. She goes town(?)
the day after tomorrow with
her Father and I am going
[side 4]
to send a little parcel by her
& ask Burnet to attend to a
Commission for me. The
parcel contains the old
watch which belonged to
Grandmama & if I can get it
repaired & put it in a little
stand, it will serve me as
a clock. But I want to know
what it will cost to repair
it first. I don't care about
the repeating work being fast
in ______ - that, will, I know
be very expensive. My idea
is that it wants a new main
spring & to be cleaned. Ask
Burnet to be kind enough
to take it to your friend
Behr, & ask him what it
will cost to make it new, &
send me a line and
then I will decide.
Love from us all,
Formost affecte,
M.R. SingletonCollection
