Scope and Content

Letter to Mrs. Burnet from V.C.(?) Aiken. Envelope is addressed to her in care of Mr. ---andale, Mansion House, Greenville, SC. Transcription: Condnacca(?) Mar. 22 [18]65 Dear Mrs. Rhett I received your letter on Friday last & only defered [sic] writing this evng [sic] that I might hear positively from Mr. Aiken (who only returned today) if the sad news of Hugh's death could be so, we had heard the rumor, & I am sorry to tell you he confirms the news. He was killed in a skirmish on Lynch Creek. Ladies procured his body & gave it a christian burial, in a churchyard, all of which is very comforting. But poor Mary what must her grief be, she is completely heartbroken. What a loss to his family & indeed to the Confederacy. Sister is with me, she wrote you a long letter in reply to your first to me. You should have got it before your last was written. She leaves on Tuesday next with Mr. Aiken for Wims(?). He goes again with supplies. Sis hoped to have met you here & I hope you have already made your plans to pay me an early visit. I will take no denial. Sister encloses a letter from Sister Ellen & would write herself but feels too miserably. Do write immediately when you are coming & direct to Greenwood, Abbeville, Dist. That is our post office but we live seven miles from there. The mails are very irregular so you must give one several days to get your letter so that I may send to meet you. Sister & Mr. Aiken beg to be affectionately remembered to you. I close hoping to meet you at an early day. Yours truly & sincerely, V.C. Aiken Envelope: Mrs. Burnet Rhett care Mr. ------dale Mansion House Greenville, S.C.
