Description

Eighteen color digital photographs of the interior of the original house at 126 Spring Street, featuring every room. Some photos of the second floor show the original rear and gable of the original house. Each photograph is labeled with the location within the house. See sample in this record (photos C, F, N, and R). On October 25, 2018, HCF staff contacted architect Kevan Hoertdoerfer about proposed changes to 126 Spring Street that were to be heard at the Board of Architectural review. Will Hamilton and Katherine Pemberton did a site visit and meeting to ascertain whether the proposed changes to the front fenestration were appropriate. HCF was concerned that the front entry may have indicated a side hall plan single house. During the site visit, they were able to see a good amount of framing and were able to discern that the front door and windows on the first floor had been modified. There were some strange layout issues with the house so they were intrigued to look upstairs. Upon closer inspection they were able to see that an earlier house on the lot had been built away from the street and that an addition had been made to its front, effectively filling in the area between the house and Spring Street. This is confirmed on the exterior as there is a slight increase in roof height to the rear. In the second floor of the interior they were able to see the exterior front of the earlier building, now encapsulated within the later addition. They noted the gable end, still with its exterior trim boards. Inside the older portion of the house they noted original wooden roof shingles that had been covered over with a later metal roof. They were also able to tell from the framing the former location of a centrally located chimney in the back building. Since it had a central chimney and only two rooms on each floor, there seemed to be limited options for a stair. They found evidence of that tight stair within the northeast corner of the old building portion. (Account of Katherine Pemberton, Jan. 2019.)
