KING.245-247.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1838; rehabilitated 1986. Nathan Hart, who also constructed 220 King Street, built these 2 brick edifices, probably shortly before his death in 1840. When auctioned by his estate, Hart's widow purchased 245 King Street and his daughter, Mrs. Mordecai Levy, bought 247 King Street. The building's original 3rd story was removed in the late-19th century. The first floor of the corner building retains its cast-iron pilasters, supporting an arcade infilled with banded-glazed brick and featuring windows with pressed-metal semicircular lintels. The bracketed cornice, with modillions, is similar to that at 249 King Street; the latter structure contains a plain stuccoed facade and arched 2-over-2 windows. By 1918 these buildings were used as an S.H. Kress and Co. store. The "five and dime" later became a Silver's store until 1978. Silver's also used the 3-story building immediately to the north. This edifice, 249 King Street, was designed by the architect John Henry Devereaux and built by Susan Wood in 1876. Mrs. Wood's new Italianate style building, with its flattened arched windows and banded corner pilasters, stood ready for occupancy by April of that year. With the ground floor rented to J.R. Read Co., the upper floors served as the dwelling and studio for the noted Civil War photographer George N. Barnard.
