KING.254.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1838. Moses Levy, who also built 311 East Bay Street and lost numerous buildings in the fire of 1838, had begun construction of this 3-story building shortly before his death in 1839. From the start the structure was rented to Charleston's most famous antebellum silversmithing firm, Hayden, Gregg and Company. Generally used as a hardware store since the late-19th century, the building has lost most of its storefront in the process of numerous renovations, although it retained its scored stucco facade with stone lintels and cast-iron grills with palmetto designs in the parapet. The building experienced major deterioration until recent renovations. The Levy family also owned the property next door at 256 King Street at the time of the fire, then sold it to the jeweler William H. Jones a few months later. After the structure passed through numerous owners, the cornice was replaced by a tile parapet. 256 King Street was built simultaneously with 258 King Street, with a common passage through the middle. The latter structure, built by Jacob Hersman, served for most of the 19th century as a jewelry store.
