Description

Souvenir booklet for guests of the Charleston Hotel at the time it was under the proprietorship of Riddock & Byrns. Includes description of the hotel and its history, and illustrations of various points of interest. Illustrations include U.S. Custom House; U.S. Post Office and Court House; Pringle House [27 King Street, a/k/a Miles Brewton House]; Magnolia-on-the-Ashley [Magnolia Gardens]; Confederate Monument and Soldiers' Lot, Magnolia Cemetery; Country Club, Belvedere-on-the-Cooper; Fort Sumter; Jasper Monument; East Battery; Medical College of South Carolina; Confederate Monument; St. Michael's Church [80 Meeting Street--with view of Meeting Street cable car tracks]. From 1838 to 1960, the Charleston Hotel was situated at 200 Meeting Street, one block from King Street, where "all interests centre at this point, thence radiating to the business, shopping and amusement districts..." A magnificent 4-story Greek Revival structure of brick and stone, with giant Corinthian order columns probably designed by Prussian-born architect Charles E. Reichardt. The demolition of the hotel in 1960 for a motor inn (now removed) remains a dark memory for many preservationists. Photocopy of the original. 16 p., ill. (photocopy of original)
