Constructed ca. 1840; rehabilitated 1995. This front-facing Classical Revival style building, with arched windows at the south end of the front facade and in the center, served as the studio for Charleston's most prominent mid-19th century photographer, George Cook. His record photographs of Charleston following the earthquake of 1886 remain the best documentation of that natural disaster. Cook later moved to Richmond, Virginia and expanded his photography business. Once covered with curtain wall facades, the building has recently been rehabilitated. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper article about Carolopolis Award given to the property (1/15/1995); photocopy of advertisement for J.R. Johnson & Son (265 King Street) from Business Guide of Charleston (1889); 1880s engraving of 1899 Charleston City Directory; 1886 Earthquake Damage Assessment; Hurricane Hugo Damage Survey; Sanborn Maps (1884-1955); excerpt from Old Codgers Charleston Address Book (20th century residents/occupants).
