KING.275.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1897-99; renovated 1996. The Hirsch Israel Company, who rented 273 King Street across Wentworth Street, completed a monumental structure on this site by 1899. In 1919 the building with a domed corner tower was sold for the Dime Savings Bank. The tower and much of the facade was later stripped away, and the Hirsch Israel building became a discount clothing store with a yellow brick facade. The building has been recently renovated with a contemporary interior, revealing the surviving framing of the upper stories. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File containers newspaper article (1936); photocopy of early 20th century(?) photograph (undated, unattributed); photocopy of a 1929 receipt featuring an engraved drawing of the building; 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; 20th century occupants (Old Codgers Charleston Address Book); 1884 and 1888 Sanborn maps.Collection
