Constructed 1838-39; altered 1890, 1950. Miller, Ripley and Company signed a contract with the Scottish builder/architect James Gordon to construct two, 3-story brick stores on these sites before the fire of 1838. Rebuilt immediately after the fire, as double tenements still in the Greek Revival style, 290 King Street was purchased by Samuel Johnston. Johnston added an Italianate storefront to the building as well as the pressed-metal window surrounds and a cornice placed over the surviving Greek Revival parapet grills. The Bernard family purchased the corner building at 292 King Street, and it remained in their hands until 1912 when it was passed to a company owned by the Sottile family. Remodeled in 1950 in the Art Moderne style, the structure has wide horizontal bands between floors and fluted pilasters.
File containers newspaper article (1983 DYKYC); Rosen and Associates inspection report for 290 King (1988) & for 292 King (2007).
