KING.293-297.1Scope and Content
Constructed circa 1839. Mordecai Cohen, who owned property throughout Charleston, including the tenements at 97-101 Broad Street, built a 3½ story brick structure with a front gabled parapet on his property located at 297 King Street after the 1838 fire. Miles Drake, a dry goods merchant, purchased the building in 1851, and his family held it until 1912. In the late-19th century Italianate detailing was added, but much of this was removed in 1950 by Pastime Amusement Company, a Sottile family real estate firm. Cohen built 293 and 295 King Street as well, but these buildings have experienced even more alteration than their neighbor to the north in the 20th century.
File contains newspaper article about 297 King Street (1982 DYKYC); "SC Architectural inventory 1973" entry for 293 King Street; photocopies of photographs (undated, unattributed) that possibly supported a BAR application; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2005, 2007) for 293 King & (2001) for 295 King; architectural drawings (photocopy) of existing elevation, floor plan, ceiling plan (2006).Collection
