KING.302.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1915-16. John Newcomer, architect. The architect John D. Newcomer designed this edifice for a building and loan company, and its construction was completed by 1916 at a cost of $13,000. Built of brick with a veneer of limestone, the upper floor with a semicircular window topped by a console bracket and a surmounting cornice supporting a roof balustrade derives from the Beaux Arts style. The Title Guarantee Building contrasts with the late Italianate style storefront added to a 1790s building at 300 King Street. The Onslow Candy Company added the surviving pressed-metal window hoods and the bracketed cornice. The arch with the bracketed keystone at the Title Guarantee Building, however, harmonizes with the surviving arched entry at 304 King Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper article (1982 DYKYC); letterhead with engraving of building (1917).
