KING.304.1Scope and Content
Built by Albert Sottile ca. 1898 and leased to Eddie Riddock who operated Riddock's Arcade, which served Charleston as a soda shop. When this business failed ca. 1911, Sottile announced plans to convert the facility to a movie theater, the Princess Theater. Surviving as a movie house exclusively, the Princess boasted a mirror screen and a five-piece orchestra for film accompaniment and intermittent entertainment. The console bracketed arch on this structure and the now-restored front interior remain from the Princess Theater. The building has housed many businesses including LeRoys and Southern Furniture. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains 20th century occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; excerpt from Movie Theaters of Charleston; newspaper article (Behre, 5/26/1997).
