KING.308.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1793. This edifice is one of several survivors in this part of King Street of late-18th century dwellings that were later converted to commercial uses. Scottow's widow died here in 1812, and the property was purchased by Christian Henry Faber. The parcel was subdivided with the creation of 2 lots to the south, including the surviving Greek Revival building at 306 King Street, built by Faber. The Georgian character of the building survives in the diminishment of the window sizes from the 2nd to the 3rd floors in the Classical architectural tradition, and in the scored stucco facade and stucco cornice. The building retains its Victorian period storefront with cast-iron components. The remnant of the piazza to the south was infilled, in the King Street tradition, many years ago and serves as a separate shop on the ground story. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper articles including 1982 DYKYC; occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; timelines for building/alterations and owner/occupancy (Sarah Fick, 1999); photocopy of 1843 plat.
