KING.314.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1878. This 3-story stuccoed building was built in 1878 as a grocery by the wholesale grocer and liquor dealer Benjamin Feldman and his partner Robert Teskey; it replaced a wooden structure on the site which they had leased before purchasing the property in 1871. The structure served a mixed use for many years, with various businesses occupying the ground floor and the upstairs serving as a residence and later as a boardinghouse. By 1890 it served as J.N. Peeckson Choice Family Groceries. A bracketed cornice surmounts a front parapeted shed roof. The facade features quoining at the corners of the upper floors and segmentally arched windows with decorative surrounds. A piazza original to the building was enclosed in the 1920s and today houses the separate business designated as 312½ King Street. (Source: The Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains two newspaper articles (including 1982 DYKYC); 1903 illustrated advertisement for J. N. Peeckson Choice Family Groceries; description of physical appearance and statement of significance from Part I Certification application, and descriptions of architectural features and proposed rehabilitation work Part II Certification application, both unattributed, undated.
