KING.320.1Scope and Content
Constructed early 19th century. This 3-story brick building, which retains its Greek Revival fenestration and chimneys, has undergone extensive remodeling since its construction in the first decade of the 1800s by Samuel Pendergrass. The first of these changes was undertaken by Thomas Fleming, a merchant who purchased the property in 1820 at public auction. Fleming raised the height of the structure, extending the top half story into a full story, and added the hipped roof. The property eventually passed to Mordecai David, who enclosed the piazza on the south side of the building, creating the separate 2-story structure now known as 318 King. This building shares walls with both of its neighboring buildings and features Italianate windows and a bracketed cornice.
