KING.336-338.1Scope and Content
Constructed after 1794. The merchant John Cunningham purchased this site in 1794 and probably built the present 3-story double building within the first decade of his ownership. This stuccoed brick Federal style building has a common facade on the upper floors, and its rear yards were formerly accessed through the common central archway, although the buildings are now two separate parcels as a result of a court order in 1879 in the settlement of debts of Mrs. Sarah Ottolengui, a later owner. Jacob Capel purchased 336 King while Dorothea Blohme bought 338 King Street, both renting to a myriad of tenants including David and Epstein, jewelers and watchmakers; Charle Holle, barber; Cable Piano; and None Such Lunch. The 1940s brought such lessees as the Arcade Shooting Gallery, the Barn Tavern, and Bert's Locker Club, reflecting changing uses. Throughout the pre-World War II history of the site, most of the commercial tenants lived upstairs. The Italianate style cornices with side brackets and the pedimented window hoods probably date from the years immediately before 1879. The former feature obscures the hipped roof dating from the late-19th century. These later details and the double form reflect the same pattern as the smaller, 2-story double building across the street, 337-339 King Street, built by the baker Henry Dorre in 1859 and subsequently divided into separate properties.
File contains newspaper articles (1982 and undated DYKYC and about a 2000 fire); Rosen and Associates inspection report (2004) for 336 King & (2001) for 337 King & (2005) for 338 King.
