KING.342.1Scope and Content
Constructed after 1821; renovated 1970, 1991. This building retains its Federal character with its hipped, slate roof and finely pointed Flemish bond facade, divided by belt coursing and 3 bays with 9-over-9 windows surmounted by rubbed brick jack arches. Miller, a jeweler, replaced 2 earlier wooden buildings on the site after buying it at auction in 1821; he retained it until his death in 1840. Although the upper floors of 342 King have remained as built, the small 2-story structure at 340 King Street was refaced in the 1940s in a late-Moderne fashion with molded bands of vertical concrete and a merlon in the stepped parapet. The brick form and fenestration are similar to that of the early-Greek Revival store and dwelling at 348 King Street, built by the Santo Domingan refugee Margaret Gidiere for her dry goods store and residence in the 1830s. This latter structure was held by numerous owners, including the German tavern keeper John Schachte. It later served as the Lyric Theater, the place where burlesque was introduced to Charleston, and eventually provided the venue for a series of discotheques and bars.
File contains newspaper article (undated DYKYC).
