The M. Marks & Sons store opened on Sept. 28, 1891, as, in the words of The News & Courier, "one of the handsomest and costliest establishments in the South." The structure stood at the site until 1955, when it was demolished to accommodate a modern department store. In the 1990s, the building was converted to a small mall, known as the Marion Square Mall, which housed Millennium Music and the building then became referred to as the Millennium Music building.
