KING.397.1Scope and Content
The earliest obtainable owner information appears in 1817 when Isaac Davega sold this property, what was then named "lot no. 6" to Charleston City Council. Four months later City Council sold the parcel. After property disputes, the land was eventually sold to Isaac Barrett, a well-established, wealthy, Jewish family. The property passed on to other hands over the years and served as a saloon, a bakery, and a radio shop. The building stood until at least 1962 but was eventually demolished (as were its neighbors earlier) and a parking garage was constructed in its place.
File contains graduate student report (Sarah Welniak, 2007) on the history of the site, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation (deeds, plats, etc.); copies of advertisements for nearby 399 King Street (Pythian Hall, Stokes' Business College), each illustrated with engraving of the building, from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898) and The Exposition (magazine) (1901).
