Date of construction not indicated; renovated in 1913; restored 1987 after a fire. Three story building sheathed in blue glazed bricks. Has elaborate cornice, topped by a pediment reading "Bluestein Brothers Department Store." Considered to be the first evidence of upper King Street revitalization.
File contains captioned photograph from 1987 showing building heavily damaged after a fire; 1988 article about efforts to rebuild the building (includes photograph); newspaper article about architectural "ruins" including 494 King (1989); draft letter from HCF (1988) in support of the Mayor's fundraising effort to stabilize the building; graduate student report (Frances Pinto, 2013) on the history of the building, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation.
