Mulberry Castle [VHS]Entry/Object ID
2007.002.0040Description
Film of the Chapmans (Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Chapman) and their life at Mulberry Castle (Mulberry Plantation), ca. 1926-1932. Footage of the Chapmans, their guests, and their house employees(?). Includes scenes of duck and deer hunting, picnicking, fishing, boating, and riding horseback. Highlights include:
*Views of the landscape and gardens, various buildings and other locations on the grounds (some identified, some not, e.g., the boat house, kitchen building, entrance gate, rice fields, shed by kitchen garden, slave cabin, possible farm buildings, etc.)
*St. James Church (with door signage not there today)
*Strawberry Chapel (people are standing with the priest there) (also shows the brick above-ground wall to the underground vault)
*Pompion Hill
*Car arriving at Mulberry (NJ license plate, 1927)
*Departures from and arrivals at the train station (Moncks Corner?)
*Wreckage from a train accident
*Footbridges on the property (to boat house and over water)
*Ferry transporting horses and men across the river
*House at Rice Hope Plantation (identified by researcher 1/2008) (long 2-story house, with board and batten shutters)
Films date at least from 1927, maybe earlier, as evidenced by the license plate on a car arriving at Mulberry, to 1932, as evidenced by a caption that shows up late in the film entitled "Mulberry Castle: the Land of My Dreams" signed "A.W., 1932." Also, some views of the grounds are pre-Loutrel Briggs gardens and some are after the gardens were installed.
Assembly of 8mm film footage, transferred to videotape. See Cannister notes.

Notes: Archivist attempted to identify the owners of the 1927 vehicle that is shown arriving at Mulberry, but NJ state records did not keep vehicle registration records.
