Scope and Content

Constructed 1897 as the car house for the Charleston Railway Co.; the complex gradually grew during the 20th century. The barn -- defined by its row of clerestory windows, steel truss roof and cavernous interior spanning 65 feet by 200 feet -- remains the most impressive piece on the block between Meeting Street, Poinsett Street, Interstate 16, and the path that was Butler Street. It represents the last extant building associated with the electric trolley system that was once integral to Charleston's transportation network. The Trolley Barn was listed on the National Register on February 28, 2017. File contains newspaper articles (undated and 1983 DYKYC about electric street cars) and Robert Behre article, 2005); Charleston Architecture Center(?) (2005) document containing trolley barn research, building and site issues, development strategies, and public workshop summary notes; illustrated page from a publication (undated, unattributed); 2003 Rezoning Application (unsigned); portion of "Landmark Overlay Zone Nomination Site Synopsis" (undated, unattributed); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; portion of letter from City of Charleston to SCE&G regarding significance of building (1986); "History of the Charleston Trolley" (undated, unattributed); 1902 Sanborn Map; photocopies of 1884 and 1859 plats; excerpt from Palmetto Traction: Electric Railways of South Carolina.
