MEETING.645.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1897 as the car house for the Charleston Railway Co.; the complex gradually grew during the 20th century. The barn -- defined by its row of clerestory windows, steel truss roof and cavernous interior spanning 65 feet by 200 feet -- remains the most impressive piece on the block between Meeting Street, Poinsett Street, Interstate 16, and the path that was Butler Street. It represents the last extant building associated with the electric trolley system that was once integral to Charleston's transportation network. The Trolley Barn was listed on the National Register on February 28, 2017.
