Scope and Content

Constructed after 1746; altered ca. 1813, 1900. Presumably constructed by planter John Drayton, builder of nearby Drayton Hall, this dwelling reaffirms Drayton's interest in Palladian design and symmetrical architectural space. This dwelling maintains a floor plan that includes four-over-four rooms separated by a central hall and stair hall. The house has been remodeled twice: once prior to 1813 when the bowed expansion was added to the west end of the house, and again at the turn of the 20th century when the shallow pediment and the rear wing were added in the spirit of the Colonial Revival movement. A brick dependency survives to the northeast. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection letters; requests for alterations; correspondence relating to the management of the property; IRS form 8283; FOHG house histories* (1997, 1981, ca. 1950, undated); narrative history by Robert P. Stockton (1979); newspaper article (DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; early 20th century photo of house (photocopy from publication); photocopy of 1813 plat. *Earlier house history conflicts with later interpretations. See Easement Manager's working files for more information. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
