LAMBOLL.008.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840; rehabilitated late-1980s. This double tenement, built by a family of bakers prior to the Civil War, once contained an open passage on the first floor that clearly separated the two dwellings. On the second floor a party wall delineates the break between the units. Although the term tenement may have negative connotations in the 20th century, in the 19th century it was common for the working class to rent space in such structures. Many dwellings like this were constructed in Ansonborough after the Great Fire of 1838 and can still be seen today.
