LAURENS.045.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1804, rehabilitated 1968-69. The cabinetmaker Thomas Wallace, whose shop on Queen Street produced furniture in the prevailing Federal style for the Charleston elite, constructed this three-story wooden single house on a raised basement in about 1804. The closed gable end of the roof and the open Greek Revival piazzas, which do not have a street entry, are perhaps the only features that set this dwelling apart from its similarly styled neighbor at 43 Laurens Street. Wallace sold the house in 1815 to Capt. Nathaniel Greene Hilliard, a Connecticut émigré. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files containing documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the covenant (including right-of-first-refusal); documentation of the sale of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations (includes some drawings); documentation related to the management of the property; newspaper article about new owners (1968); copy of HCF covenant information card; documentation of HCF's purchase, rehabilitation (DeCosta), and sale of the property; photocopy of ARP photograph.
