LAURENS.049.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1804; restored 1970. This simple Neoclassical dwelling was actually begun as an investment by the painter and glazier John Haslett and his partner Youngs Hasmer on one of 2 lots purchased from the Laurens Square property inherited by Henry Laurens II. It may have been completed by William Monies, a Scottish merchant, who was the first owner to occupy the building. The dwelling was purchased by the Paterson family when Monies returned to Scotland and was bought in 1867 by the Charleston attorney George Lamb Buist. By 1971 the house was one of the most deteriorated in the neighborhood, and its reclamation was one of the last in Historic Charleston Foundation's Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project. The small iron balconies on the second floor are apparently original.
Three files contain document of the easement on the property including related correspondence, Confirmation of Understanding, and mortgage subordination; Part I Certification Application; appraisal and IRS form 8283; documentation of the original covenant on the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; historical/chain-of-title research information (Stevenson, 1970, and Green, 1970); FOHG Garden History (1995); newspaper articles (including 1971 and 1977 DYKYC); SC Dept. of Archives and History architectural survey form; copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information); documentation of HCF's purchase and rehabilitation of the property; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2002).
