LEGARE.004.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1777; altered ca. 1788-1800; restored 1970s. George Kincaid, one of the original developers of the Legare Street area in the 1770s, built a double tenement on filled marshland in 1777. Later acquired by the wealthy English merchant and landowner William Hopton as an investment, the house was devised to his daughter Sarah in 1785. Miss Hopton sold the property shortly before her marriage to Nathaniel Russell. The westernmost dwelling retains more of its early character and still has original full paneling in its principal rooms. Late-18th century alterations include gib doors and wrought-iron balconies on the second-floor Lamboll Street elevation. Piazzas added in the early-20th century were removed in the 1970s. The eastern tenement was heavily altered in the late-19th and early-20th centuries with a piazza addition and the installation of decorative, pedimented window hoods. The dense character of this block, especially the use of the double tenement form, contrasts with the more spacious quality of lot layouts northward along Legare Street. (Also known as 30 Lamboll Street.)
Three files contain documentation of the easements on the property (1984, 2000) including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper article (DYKYC); auction house's historical research information relating to the transfer of ownership of 30 Lamboll that was for sale (2007), including copies of portions of the documents; photocopies of 19th century photos related to the house (most poor quality and people are not identified).
