LEGARE.005.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1830. Stuccoed single house of elaborate style. Originally a brick dwelling, probably in the late Federal style. Damage caused by the 1886 earthquake necessitated major reconstruction. Large bay windows were added to the street facade on all 3 floors and a balustrade and cornice supported with heavy brackets were attached at the roofline. By the 1980s, the house was cut up into 4 apartments and the building was shabby and garden overgrown. A major conversion took place in 1986 when the property was purchased by a developer who rebuilt the exterior and interior into 5 luxury condominiums. (Source: FOHG history. Note, information is not cited.) The building is also briefly described in the Buildings of Charleston's description of 7 Legare: "The antebellum house to the south at 5 Legare Street, owned in the late-19th century by the Jervey family, received severe damage in the earthquake as well. An inspector noted about its condition, "Rebuild east wall from ground." A wooden Victorian front added in 1887 was removed nearly 100 years later in the rehabilitation of this structure as three condominiums."
