LEGARE.009.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1817-25; renovated early-1900s. William Harth originally built 9 Legare Street as a tenement. It at different times became the home of Charles Macbeth, Charleston's Civil War mayor, and William H. Brawley, U.S. district judge. Originally constructed as a large single house of 3½ stories on a high English basement, and 19th-century maps show double tiers of piazzas extending along the south elevation. By the early-20th century the front portions of the piazzas were enclosed and double-tiered bay windows had been added on the south matching a polygonal bay addition near the southwest corner of the dwelling. Pedimented window heads and other details were added as well. A substantial 2-story kitchen dependency now accessed from Gibbes Street stretches along the north elevation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
