Constructed ca. 1772; restored 1985, 1990-91. This structure stands as one of fewer than 75 dwellings that remain in Charleston from the pre-Revolutionary period. The Scottish carpenter and joiner John Fullerton, responsible for a number of noteworthy Charleston buildings, built this dwelling shortly after he acquired the land from William Gibbes in 1772. Perhaps built as a speculative venture, the house was erected on what was then a sandy street with few buildings. Initially detached, the 2-story dependency functioned as a kitchen on the first floor and servants' quarters on the second. British officers under Cornwallis were quartered on the property during the Revolutionary War. A 2-story Neoclassical piazza was added to the west and south facades of the main house around 1800, and a Victorian addition was added around 1875. The grounds were landscaped to add a formal garden in 1985. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
