Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1772; restored 1985, 1990-91. This structure stands as one of fewer than 75 dwellings that remain in Charleston from the pre-Revolutionary period. The Scottish carpenter and joiner John Fullerton, responsible for a number of noteworthy Charleston buildings, built this dwelling shortly after he acquired the land from William Gibbes in 1772. Perhaps built as a speculative venture, the house was erected on what was then a sandy street with few buildings. Initially detached, the 2-story dependency functioned as a kitchen on the first floor and servants' quarters on the second. British officers under Cornwallis were quartered on the property during the Revolutionary War. A 2-story Neoclassical piazza was added to the west and south facades of the main house around 1800, and a Victorian addition was added around 1875. The grounds were landscaped to add a formal garden in 1985. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Four files contain documentation of the easements on the property (1984, 2006) including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding (1984); Part I certification (National Register) (filed 1984); letter providing appraisal value (1984 eastment); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283 (2006 eastment); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; FOHG house histories (1977, 1995); other narrative histories; newspaper articles (including DYKYC); historical/chain-of-title research information; illustration (photocopy of drawing); photocopy of 1801 plat (encompassing 11-15 Legare); photocopy of 1837 plat; photocopy of 5/28/1958 plat; biographical sketch of John Fullerton; 1886 Earthquake Damage Assessment Survey (pdf).
