LEGARE.016.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1789-90; restored 1948; restored with addition 1987. John Morrison and Hume Greenhill, builders. This wooden residence constructed by Miss Amarinthea Elliott about 1795 owns the distinction of being the first to be specified in its contract as a "single house." A deed between Miss Elliott, first owner of the house, and John Morrison and Hume Greenhill, builders, dated 1789, offers explicit detail about the plans for construction of a single house and dependencies. All of the elements that combine to create a single house (2 rooms per floor; central stair hall; constructed at the front of the lot; one fireplace in each room; and rear dependencies constructed contiguously behind, along with the later additions of piazzas) are present. Thus, Charleston's preeminent architectural form, the single house, was clearly delineated as a building tradition by the end of the 18th century. The finely crafted building lost its dependencies many years ago and now boasts a modern rear wing which looks out onto an extensive early-20th century garden. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
