LEGARE.017.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1797; additions ca. 1840. Anthony Toomer, a Revolutionary War veteran and master builder, erected this dwelling as a tenement investment soon after acquiring a 40-by-296 foot lot on Legare Street in 1796. First containing a simple two-bay house with beaded weatherboarding and a low pitched roof at a substantial distance from the street line, the property was described in an 1811 advertisement as having "a two story wooden dwelling house, brick kitchen, etc. thereon." Apparently Thomas F. Purse added the a 2-story masonry addition to the front of the house, as well as a 1-story piazza with a Greek Revival transomed screen. Most of the interior of the original house, including Neoclassical wainscoting, mantel, and staircase, remain.
File contains FOHG history of house (undated, 2002) and of garden histories (1992, 2010); newspaper article (DYKYC); photocopy of photo of house after 1886 Earthquake; photocopy of article "Historic Schools of Legare Street" by Sarah Fick (Preservation Progress, v. 54, n. 1); house history and census/chain-of-title research (Courtney Magill, 2014); photocopy of 1841 plat; 1816 advertisement for the sale of the property.
