LEGARE.023.1Scope and Content
Built ca. 1838 by Dr. Robert Trail Chisolm. It was purchased in 1863 by the Sass family and was the home of Herbert Ravenel Sass, the noted writer, historian, and naturalist. The iron gates at the entrance are said to date from ca. 1817. (Source: Information for Guides of Historic Charleston)
File contains FOHG Garden Histories (1994, 1998, 2002); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual, brief newspaper articles (1995) about the garden being on FOHG tour; historical research by Louis Green (1968), including map and plat; 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment; scant information about Robert T. Chisolm (unattributed, undated); biographical information about Herbert Ravenel Sass; house history compiled by previous owner (Mr. Pratt-Thomas Sr.), including photos, maps, plats, deed and title research, city directory research, floor plans, history of Legare Street, Chisolm family history, and Chisolm Mill history; photocopy of article "Historic Schools of Legare Street" by Sarah Fick (Preservation Progress, v. 54, n. 1).Collection
