LEGARE.025.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840-50; altered late-19th century. Originally completed with paired 2-story, square-columned porticos on each end of its front facade, this long stucco dwelling was altered following damage from the earthquake of 1886. John B. White built the house following his 1838 purchase of the lot from Robert Chisolm. It was later owned by the Williman family and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Frost, who made certain Italianate style alterations, including the central bay window and pediment. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; and correspondence related to the management of the property; brief newspaper article (1942) announcing the Frost's purchase of the house; 2002(?) real estate listing that includes house history; 1886 Earthquake damage assessment.
