Scope and Content

Colonial Revival house with a columned portico before it was remodeled in the Georgian style in 1937 by T. Wilbur Thornhill, an oil broker. Stephen Thomas was the architect for the remodeling. (Source: Information for Guides of Historic Charleston) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports; photocopy (reduced-size) of architectural drawing "Alterations to 26 Legare Street for T.W. Thornhill (date illegible); narrative history by Elias Ball Bull; historical research notes by Samuel G. Stoney; correspondence between W.G. Chisolm and T. Wilbur Thornhill regarding request for a photo of his house; newspaper article (DYKYC, 1937), newspaper(?) photos of the house (1938), and Preservation Progress article "The Whaley House" (Elizabeth Middleton Parker, 1983); photocopies of newspaper advertisements for the sale of the property (1846, 1870). Added copy of cost of construction (1938), copy of alterations and repairs estimate (1936), and newspaper article about garden (1974) after visit from descendant 8/29/2022.
