Scope and Content

The first house on the property known as 48 Legare Street was the residence of Sarah Lining and her husband Solomon Legare. The house and lot were later conveyed to Dr. Edward Braislford who appears to have used the house as a rental for several years. Sold in 1831 to Alexander Berry whose wife, children, and slaves lived there after his death and until the property was sold to Samuel Webb between 1870-1873. The documentary evidence and architectural style indicate that the Samuel Webb replaced the earlier Legare-Webb house ca. 1871. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS Form 8283; FOHG house history (1997); historical research and supporting documentation (maps, plats) prepared by Sarah Fick (2008). The files may eventually contain easement appraisal report; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property. See Easement Manager's working files for more information. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager). Easement donation photos only.
