Constructed 1881; renovated with addition 1915; rehabilitated mid-1980s. Abrahams and Seyle, architects. This building was constructed as the Crafts School in 1881. Built to replace the Friend Street School, which was designed by Edward C. Jones, founded in 1859, and destroyed in the fire of 1861, it rises 3 stories on a high basement. Architects Abrahams and Seyle designed the Gothic Revival style school, which features butresses and lancet arches. The school was named for William Crafts, the noted Charleston antebellum poet and intellectual, who is buried in the graveyard of King's Chapel in Boston. David Hyer designed the 3-story wing in 1915. The building was converted to condominiums in the mid-1980s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
