Scope and Content

This alley, running north from Atlantic Street halfway between East Battery and Church Street, was named for its meandering course. For a time known as Lightwood Alley, situated on land owned by Edward Lightwood on Church Street, it regained its original name in the 1970s. Lightwood Alley may have been an entrance to Lightwood's property. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual; Charleston Streets website.) File contains newspaper article about changing the name from Lightwood Alley to Zig Zag Alley (1971); street name change timeline (Ina Bootle, 2018).
