MAIDEN.005.1Scope and Content
Maiden Lane, established 1788. This short thoroughfare is one of five Charleston streets to retain its original cobblestoned paving. Nonetheless, most of its historic structures have disappeared by the mid-20th century. The small brick single house at 5 Maiden Lane is the sole survivor of three nearly identical dwellings; the other two were demolished in the early 1960s. This remaining house was built by Robert F. Henry following his acquisition of the site in 1838. HCF purchased the property in 1967 as part of the Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project.
Three files contain documentation of the easements on the property (interior and exterior) including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property, including HCF's purchase and sale of it; scant chain-of-title research (transcriptions of 1838, 1944 Conveyances); copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information).
