MARKET.034-38.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1850; renovated 1970s. J.C.H. Claussen operated various wholesale businesses in the antebellum period including a candy factory, a grist and meal mill, and a cracker manufactory. Of these buildings, the one at 36-38 North Market, including a central section and two side portions, retain their original cast-iron storefronts. While bowed metal window heads survive on the second story, the third story was lost in the tornado of 1938. The Bay Fruit Company and other produce wholesalers operated in the range until the 1960s. Some of the structures were renovated in the 1970s and 1980s to house various shops and restaurants.
File contains handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant); newspaper article "The Rainbow Market" (date not indicated); advertisement for J.C.H. Claussen & Co. with illustration of the building from 1890 business directory.Collection

Note
Notes: Per SC Room librarian: In 1823, the Old Church of the Redeemer, aka Mariner's Church, aka Seamen's Chapel, was located near the intersection of Water and Church Streets but it was destroyed by the 1886 earthquake. Relocated to 34 Market Street in 1915.Created By
