MARKET.050-54.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1850; renovated 1932, 1984. This three-part range of two-story brick buildings was built before 1850 and has served a succession of uses. The 52 North Market Street portion was occupied by a barber, A.S. Clark, and 54 North Market was a grocery for A.J.W. Gorse. In 1932 Henry Otto Hasselmeyer and Walter L. Shaffer converted the buildings into one of Charleston's longest running restaurants, which operated under their family ownership until 1984. The structures have altered fenestration but are unified through a series of segmental first-floor openings. The easternmost buildings have similar arches on the second story framing paired windows. In recent years a former dependency, running along Anson Street to the north, was altered with the addition of a storefront.
File contains handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant); newspaper articles about the sale of Henry's Restaurant (1983?); postcard advertisement featuring the Sword Gate.Collection
