MARKET.112.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1850-52; rehabilitated 1982-83, 1995. This substantial 4-story building with a granite columnar storefront and matching lintels, sills, and projecting cornice was built soon after the acquisition of this key site in the beginning of the 1850s. Serving a succession of clothing and dry goods stores, it continued this use with the Hornik family, who leased the property in 1892 from the owners, the Claussens, and eventually purchased the parcel after 1917. The small building to the east lost much of its facade in the mid-20th century but regained its earlier detailing in a massive historic rehabilitation of the structures in 1982-83. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register) (unsigned, determination not indicated); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper articles (including story about Hank Holliday); handwritten staff research "source notes"; invitations to openings of Planter's Inn (1988, 1994); copy of plat (Exh. B of conservation easement).
See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. No easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) on file.Collection
