Constructed ca. 1874 as a school house for the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial School. The original building was a 3-story flat-roofed clapboard structure, resting on a high brick foundation with tall arches set into the brick. In 1974, the structure underwent extensive renovations, which included removing all floors above the basement level, leaving only the brick foundation. The current building is a flat-roofed 1½ -story brick building with high arches set into the brickwork.
File contains graduate student report (Samuel Woodson, 2009) on the history of the building/property, which includes historical/chain-of-title research, photos, and other supporting documentation (National Register nomination form, plats, etc.); excerpt from "African-Americans and Charleston: Histories Intertwined" (Smith, 2010).
