Scope and Content

Constructed between 1828-1840. Single house design in the Greek Revival style, 3-stories tall. Built a short time after 1828 when John Dewees, a rice merchant, bought the land from James Elfe, a mariner. Three files containing documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to covenant (including right-of-first-refusal); annual inspection reports; correspondence and other documentation related to the management and rehabilitation of the property (including project manual); envelope containing stucco samples and nail; sleeve containing wallpaper sample; brief narrative histories; historical/chain-of-title research information; copies of titles (1878, 1938, 1939, 1974); copy of floor plans (undated); copies of early plats of Village of Hampstead); copy of ca. 1985 plat; 1888, 1944 Sanborn maps; documentation of HCF's purchase of the property; information about Charleston Affordable Housing publication; documentation of donation of archaeological materials to the Charleston Museum.
