Constructed ca. 1822. Built by the factor Robert Lewis in 1822, this 2½ story residence stands on land once belonging to Charles Pinckney. The original wood-frame house appears to have had three rooms on each floor with a central stair and entrance and a large semicircular porch to the rear. The original house is capped by a hipped roof with dormer windows with a low projecting pediment in front. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); correspondence regarding appraisal value; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; house history (unattributed, ca. 1979); FOHG house histories (1993, 2005); newspaper article (Charleston Mercury, 2010); sales brochure (date not indicated); photocopy of 1986 plat; engineer's (Russell Rosen) post-Hugo inspection letter; 1886 earthquake damage assessment (showing no damage); photocopy of floor plan (Briggs, 1995).
